What is a Grid Tie Inverter?
There are a couple different ways that a solar system near Columbus, OH might work. One of the most common ways to use solar power is through a grid-tied system. A grid tied solar system, sometimes used with battery backup, uses a solar grid tie inverter in order to convert the direct current (DC) into a usable form, otherwise known as an alternating current (AC). There are two main types of grid tie inverters:
- String Inverters: This type of grid tie inverter is one of the most energy efficient. In fact, it’s become the primary type of inverter for most solar systems. In order to work, it uses multiple panels, all connected to each other and fed by multiple different “strings,” or circuits.
- AC Micro Inverters: While not as common as string inverters, AC micro inverters have their uses. In this system, each panel is connected to their own micro inverter. AC micro inverters are most useful for solar systems where there are portions regularly under shade.
By utilizing a grid tie inverter, your solar system can effectively utilize the energy the sun provides.
How Does a Grid Tied Solar System Work?
A grid tied solar system is one that is connected to your existing utility grid. The solar panels, using a grid tie inverter, convert DC into AC and use that to power the system. If you make more energy than your home needs, the rest goes to the grid, and you’ll receive credit for the energy you provide. If there’s a point where you’re using more energy than the system can provide, then the system switches over to electrical energy. The system will always use solar energy before it uses energy given by your electrical provider. This way, you can always have power, and can even save or make money, depending on how much solar power you generate.
Grid Tied Solar System with Battery Backup
While many grid tied systems sell energy back to the utility provider, that doesn’t have to be the case. Since energy can often exceed demand during the day, you may want to consider a grid tied solar system with a battery backup. Like a standard system, this still uses a grid tie inverter and is still connected to the utility grid. Unlike the standard system, however, a grid tied solar system with battery backup will use excess power to charge a battery. This excess energy can be used at night, when your system will likely be producing less power. While you won’t get credit from the utility provider, you can save money on bills by utilizing stored solar power rather than electric.
